The Harmonic Sea
Humanity in Motion
A collective portrait of our shared humanity.
An interactive spatial sound installation where visitors create digital sea creatures that become part of a living, evolving ocean. Through art, sound, and participation, thousands of individual expressions come together to form a dynamic ecosystem that reflects the beauty of human connection.
PROJECT OVERVIEW
What Is The Harmonic Sea?
Created for the 2026 SNF Nostos Festival in Athens, Greece, The Harmonic Sea transforms festival visitors from passive spectators into active creators.
Participants answer three simple questions about themselves on their phones. Their responses generate a unique digital sea creature that represents who they are in that moment. Each creature is released into a shared ocean ecosystem projected at architectural scale, where it influences the movement, density, and soundscape of the installation.
The result is a living digital ecosystem co-created by thousands of people. It is a collective portrait of humanity in motion.
THE CHALLENGE
How do you help thousands of strangers see themselves as part of something larger?
Large public festivals often position audiences as observers. People experience the event individually, rarely seeing how their identities, emotions, and actions contribute to a larger collective story.
The Harmonic Sea was designed to bridge the gap between personal expression and community participation by transforming individual contributions into a shared work of art.

THE EXPERIENCE

STEP 1: CREATE
Visitors scan a QR code and access a mobile web experience requiring no download.

STEP 2: EXPRESS
Participants answer three questions exploring:
• Connectedness
• Expressiveness
• Emotional State
These responses generate a unique digital sea creature.

STEP 3: RELEASE
The creature enters the living ecosystem projected on the festival's LED wall, becoming part of a collective digital ocean.

THE LIVING ECOSYSTEM
Unlike traditional digital installations, The Harmonic Sea remembers.
Each creature persists within the ecosystem and may reappear throughout the festival, creating moments of rediscovery and recognition. The ocean grows, evolves, and accumulates memory over time.
The ecosystem includes six archetypal
creature families:
-
The Collective
-
The Individual
-
The Protector
-
The Rememberer
-
The Adaptable
-
The Timekeeper
Together they create a balanced portrait of humanity.
THE SOUND OF HUMANITY
Every creature contributes a unique sonic signature.
As visitors move through the space, they experience an evolving spatial soundscape generated by the collective presence of the ecosystem. Rather than a traditional soundtrack, The Harmonic Sea creates a living chorus shaped by participation, density, movement, and memory.

Responsive to Human Participation
The system was designed to support high-volume interaction while maintaining visual and technical integrity. Population management, resurfacing logic, and procedural generation ensure that the ocean remains vibrant and balanced regardless of participation levels.

PROTOTYPING & TESTING
Before deployment, the project was extensively prototyped and tested within the Texas Immersive Institute's projection facilities. This iterative process allowed students, faculty, industry collaborators, and stakeholders to shape the final experience.
Testing focused on:
-
Mobile usability
-
Spatial audio evaluation
-
Projection wall visualization
-
Concurrent system performance
-
Real-time creature generation
BEHIND THE PROJECT
A University + Industry Production Model
The Harmonic Sea was selected by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation for SNF Nostos 2026 because of Texas Immersive Institute's unique production model that combines student learning with professional practice.
Students worked alongside industry professionals to create this experience.
